QENA EGYPT - October 19: Household waste is picked up at collection points in the village of Awlad Amer near QENA, EGYPT on October 19. The waste is deposited at collection points marked with trash cans, though much of it is on the ground. Then the teams of men scoop it up and throw it in the back of a tractor, until it is taken to a transfer station. (David Degner / GIZ)

On 19-21 July 2016 the National Solid Waste Management Programme (NSWMP) conducted the third round of basic “Integrated Waste Management Planning” training in Cairo for representatives from four governorates: North Sinai, South Sinai, Ismailia and Suez. The training was requested by the Waste Management Regulatory Agency (WMRA) in order to enable the governorates to do waste planning and coordinate with the national level.
The training focused on providing the essential knowledge for developing a basic solid waste management plan including the technical, financial, institutional, environmental & legal requirements. They were introduced to the “Strategic Directives for Solid Waste Management”, which were published in 2014 by the Ministry of Environment. During the course of the training, participants were engaged in developing a solid waste plan for an imaginary city putting into application the theoretical knowledge they acquired. This training will be conducted for all the 27 governorates of Egypt.
